Question: I am about to direct a production of The Trojan Women and want to a uthenticate costumes while relating the universality of the tragedy to the genoc ide of The American Indian The Jews (WWII) and Kosovo - any suggestions, ide as welcomed!!!! Thanks!
Answer: I have recently read the Iliad with a view to the costumes. My guess is that the costumes painted on the stone sarcophagus found at Agia Triada, Crete are most like the costumes of Troy at the time of the Trojan War. This object is at the Archeological Museum, Heraklion, Crete and is visible on their website at Click Here.
A better picture is at Click Here On the sarcophagus there are two types of skirts in evidence: woven and animal hide. The hide skirts have rounded hems, while the hems of the woven ones are straight. On the same page is the Miniature sculpture of the snake goddess. She wears a flounced skirt with her breasts exposed. This dress was probably also used at Troy. This is likely the dress which Aphrodite wore when she visited Helen in Homer's Iliad. My guess is that this dress was reserved for goddesses and priestesses who represented goddesses. The skirts on the sarcophagus are more like the dress worn every day.

Question: What clothing did goddesses wear?
Answer: They did not have to wear any clothing at all and are sometimes pictured totally nude. This often symbolizes their purity. During the ancient Greek period they are often shown wearing fine clothes that are contemporary to the artist. This would include peplos, chiton, and himation for the classical Greeks.
Question: why are woman clothed and men are not?
Answer: During the classical period women were secluded. When they were seen they had a lot of clothes on. The men, on the other hand, were often unclothed as they participated in athletic contest without clothes. This custom was established very early because an athlete was killed when he tripped and was strangled by his clothes. Because of its associations with athletic contests, the nude pose came to be considered heroic and appropriate for all heroes, not just athletic ones.

Answer: Most important would be a shining crown on your head with a symbol of a dove on it. Next would be a wand in your hand with a shere on the end representing a quince. The gown should be silk and diaphanous, but it consists of two or more rectangles of material as wide as you are from wrist to wrist with your arms streched out and as long as you are high at the shoulders. If one layer is too transparent you should add more layers. Half of the pieces are on your front and the other half on your back fastened on the short ends above your shoulders. The material is then gathered with one or more belts to provide sleeves or folds as suits the weather.
The following shows the way the garment is fastened at the top: Click here
The following shows one belted style: Click here
The following shows a more sleveless effect that is obtained by gathering the material more: Click here

Answer: Greek art focuses on societal interactions. Women are favorably portrayed in flowing gowns and comely appearance. Many of their activities are represented including some very private ones. In fact, the quality of their representation is surprising in view of the degraded position they hold in the descriptions of the classical Greek Society. This is possibly due to the fact that the subject of classical Greek art is a society of 500 years in the past that held women more highly.

Question: How has clothing changed through the years?
Answer: The earliest clothing was the skins of animals that were wrapped around the body. Later weaving produced rectangles of cloth that were wrapped around the body also. As weaving and sewing advanced clothes were made to conform more to the body's shape. Pants were first developed in cold climates while skirts were fashioned in very worm climates. Temperate climates chose pants for men and skirts for women. Practicality also affected design. Collars were originally replaceable items to protect shirts from being soiled by greasy, long hair. Underwear is a recent development to promote personal hygiene.

Question: I'm the Dramaturg for my university's production of Lysistrata and I was doing some research on the weaving practices of women during the Classical Period. Could you give me some information on the cultural significance of weaving and what sort of tools they used to do it. Thank You! Answer: Weaving was very important for the women of ancient Greece because it was the work of goddesses and queens. Weaving is also an important analogy for the course of fate. Pausanias (8.4.1) says "After the death of Nyctimus, Arcas the son of Callisto came to the throne. He introduced the cultivation of crops, which he learned from Triptolemus, and taught men to make bread, to weave clothes, and other things besides, having learned the art of spinning from Adristas." What follows are quotes about weaving from Homer:
"She (Hector's wife) was at her loom in an inner part of the house, weaving a double purple web, and embroidering it with many flowers." (Iliad Book XXII)
"Now the son of Tydeus was in pursuit of the Cyprian goddess, spear in hand, for he knew her to be feeble and not one of those goddesses that can lord it among men in battle like Athena or Enyo the waster of cities, and when at last after a long chase he caught her up, he flew at her and thrust his spear into the flesh of her delicate hand. The point tore through the ambrosial robe which the Graces had woven for her, and pierced the skin between her wrist and the palm of her hand, so that the immortal blood, or ichor, that flows in the veins of the blessed gods, came pouring from the wound; for the gods do not eat bread nor drink wine, hence they have no blood such as ours, and are immortal." (Iliad Book V)
"It may be that you will have to ply the loom in Argos at the bidding of a mistress, or to fetch water from the springs Messeis or Hypereia, treated brutally by some cruel task-master; then will one say who sees you weeping, 'She was wife to Hector, the bravest warrior among the Trojans during the war before Ilius.'" (Iliad VI)
"On this the rest of the Achaeans with one voice were for respecting the priest (Chryses) and taking the ransom that he offered; but not so Agamemnon, who spoke fiercely to him and sent him roughly away. "Old man," said he, "let me not find you tarrying about our ships, nor yet coming hereafter. Your sceptre of the god and your wreath shall profit you nothing. I will not free her (Chryse). She shall grow old in my house at Argos far from her own home, busying herself with her loom and visiting my couch; so go, and do not provoke me or it shall be the worse for you." (Iliad, Book I)
"Go, then, within the house, and busy yourself with your daily duties, your loom, your distaff, and the ordering of your servants; for war is man's matter, and mine above all others of them that have been born in Ilius." (Iliad, Book VI)
"The immortals know no care, yet the lot they spin for man is full of sorrow;..." ( Iliad, Book XXIV)
"And she hath devised in her heart this wile besides; she set up in her halls a mighty web, fine of woof and very wide, whereat she would weave, and anon she spake among us:
'"Ye princely youths, my wooers, now that the goodly Odysseus is dead, do ye abide patiently, how eager soever to speed on this marriage of mine, till I finish the robe. I would not that the threads perish to no avail, even this shroud for the hero Laertes, against the day when the ruinous doom shall bring him low, of death that lays men at their length. So shall none of the Achaean women in the land count it blame in me, as well might be, were he to lie without a winding-sheet, a man that had gotten great possessions."
'So spake she, and our high hearts consented thereto. So then in the day time she would weave the mighty web, and in the night unravel the same, when she had let place the torches by her. Thus for the space of three years she hid the thing by craft and beguiled the minds of the Achaeans; but when the fourth year arrived and the seasons came round, then at the last one of her women who knew all declared it, and we found her unravelling the splendid web. Thus she finished it perforce and sore against her will....'" (Odyssey, Book II)
"Right easily known is that man's seed, for whom Cronion weaves the skein of luck at bridal and at birth:" (Odyssey, Book IV)

Question: average weight?
Answer: The effects of the folds illustrated in the vace paintings suggest a material that is very light and fine. Of course the weight used would vary with the weather. Question: I noticed that not many women wore clothing in many of the pictures that I have seen on the topic for my project. Is this true or do they only pose nude in pictures?
Answer: In ancient Greece public nudity was much more tolerated than it is today. But it was mainly the men that appeared nude. In the Minoan culture women wore their breasts exposed, but in the other cultures they were covered. The Greek men became accustomed to nudity in athletic competitions. This practice led to the heroic nude which displayed heroes and victors in the nude. Artists reinforced this practice because it is easier to achieve a naturalistic pose in a nude figure. The naturalism achieved became quite popular and this reinforced the idea of the nude in art. Eventually women were portrayed this way too. The ideal women in the nude was found to be sexy as well so images of nude women became quite popular. The result is that women are more often pictured nude than they appear in reality.
One fact that is interesting about ancient Greek art is the wide variety of activities that are pictured. This gives us more insight into the culture of the ancient Greeks than into other cultures. Within this contest the question of nudity becomes more interesting. Are there topics that are more conducive to nudity than others. For bathing nudity seems logical, but what about weaving? And why should the Greeks have pictured women dressing and undressing. Now we think this is sexy, but did the Greeks have the same idea? Perhaps the artists were just interested in abstract shapes.

Question: What if any were the differences in Crete and /greek clothing
Answer: Greek clothes were well adapted to the fact that the clothes were woven on a loom by the women of the community. The clothes were made up of simple rectangular patterns that were easy to weave and sew together. From this point of view the clothes of Minoan Crete were quite remarkable. The ladies wore a three piece outfit consisting of three pieces. On the upper body a vest-like garment was worn that could expose the breasts and perhaps cover them if the weather was cold. Later Nausicaa argues with her father for washing thus:

Question: How did the Gods dress
Answer: The gods and goddesses have the ability to shift their shape
and adapt their dress to the tastes and needs of their clients. The question
may more relate to how they dressed for each other. For almost two thousand
years the gods and goddesses have been portrayed without any clothes at all
even though the ancient Greeks protrayed them usually with clothes. The
ancient Greek concept of the heroic nude, developed in the context of their
athletic events, encouraged this portrayal. A nude god or goddess also has
the symbolic meaning of purity, while a nude mortal is associated with
sin and immorality.
Of course when a god or goddess dresses for good effect they dress in the
finest garments. Precious materials of high value are mentioned. But
even silk is not fine enough for the divine. Gossamer is the material of
choice. Mortals cannot begin to deal with this material which can only be
woven by spiders under divine control. Gossamer cannot even be worn by
mortals. When it is worn by an immortal it has a divine effect.
Clothing has never been a problem for the gods and goddesses. Athena
makes it for most of them. And when she makes it, it is often imperishable and
never needs replacement.

Snake goddess.
The top is a vest exposing the breasts with sleeves, The skirt is heavily
flounced and reaches to the floor. The top of the skirt may be at the waist or
it may ride low on the hips. There is a girdle consisting of a wide belt or
apron that covers the joints in between these two garments. In the ninteenth
century a similar look was achieved with a whalebone girdle and petticoats but
it seems unlikely that the Mycenaeans used either of these. It seems more
likely that the flouncing was achieved by sewing ruffled squares in a regular
pattern on the outside of a tapered skirt. The ruffles could be fastened on
just the top edge.

Question: how do you make a replica of aniceint greek clothing with a sheet?
Answer: You will have little success with a sheet. A sheet is the wrong
shape and
too stiff. What you need is a piece of material as wide as you are tall and
twice as long. Fold the material and on one side next to the fold you need
to pin the material so the two edges are fastened. One pin is one-third of
the way from the fold to the other edge. The other pin is two-thirds of the
way. Now get inside the material so your head is between the pins and the
pins rest on your shoulders. Now gather the material around your waste so
the material does not drag on the floor. Tie the material with a belt or
apron so it stays gathered.
The best material is a gauze. Silk is best but cotton is acceptable.
Wool can be made to work but it is hard to find wool gauze. Greek clothes
seem to have the texture of a fine silk nightgown.

the Minoan warriors. These priestesses dramatized the goddesses fighting with
the enemy, but they did not really fight. They wore the flounced
skirt, girdle, and revealing vest that the Minoan priestesses wore. But the
Amazons became a symbol for a generalized enemy. Artists then depicted them
in whatever garb was characteristic of the enemy at the time of the artist.

Question: Greetings: An excellent historical novelist uses pleats/folds as a central image for a 15th-c. courtesan on Cyprus (& Rhodes) who is explicitly compared to Aphrodite & who has pleated hair, pleat-like dimples, intricate clothing, etc. Are there any classical sources specifically linking pleats with Aphrodite (or other goddesses)? Literary, visual-arts, or what? TIA...
Answer: First establish what pleated hair looks like. There are few
references to it. But here is one: Pleated hair. Here is a verbal description:
Click here. Such an informal style does not seem suitable for
a goddess. Here is a goddess with a pleated gown: A souvenir Tyche is an ancient copy of a lost statue of Antioch's city goddess, with gold inset eyes, mural crown, and pleated drapery. Worcester Art Museum.
Though pleats are not associated with ancient Greek goddesses braids are.
And there were sacred dresses but they were not pleated. The ancient Minoan
skirts were flounced rather than pleated. The classical Greek peplos looked
to be ruffled rather than pleated. But beauty was an important quality of
women and goddesses. A goddess would be likely to wear the most fashionable
garb. And styles changed dramatically. Pleats might have been stylish
at some point.

Answer: What is called the classical style is often attached to Ancient

beautifully over the body. But the Greeks were a dynamic people who changed
styles frequently. They did stick to similar structures with the flounced
skirt in heroic times, the peplos in archaic times and the chiton in classical
times. With this base many combinations of belts, ties, ties, jewelry, and
hairdos were tried. We can study the styles by reviewing images on pottery
from various dates.

Question: My daughter is studying Ancient Greece from 2500 - 3000 B.C.E.
She had to make a chiton from this time period. We sewed one last night out
of pink material, and today her teacher said that during this time period
ONLY white chitons were worn. Is this correct? In our research it
seems that every color was worn. What color chitons were worn during
this time?
Answer: Chitons were only worn from about 500 BCE to 100 BCE. Before this
women commonly wore skin skirts or flounced skirts. Breasts were left
uncovered. Skin skirts were never white. Even chitons were rarely white.
Pink is not a good choice because red was an expensive color. The most
likely colors are earth colors. There is little information about the
dress during the period 3000-2500 BCE (5000 to 4500 years ago).
Greek dress was assumed white because the Greeks had white marble to work
with. After the marble statues had been around for a few hundred years the
white color of the marble was all that was seen even though the statues were
originally painted. The chromatic paintings from ancient Greece are all lost.
It was also believed that the white color suited their ideal attitude toward
life. In fact white, to the ancient Greeks, was the color of death. The
frescos from the Minoan culture preceeding classical Greece are quite colorful:

Question: What are the differences between the diplax, the himation and the
ampechonion? I have read all your information and scrutinised many photographs,
but cannot discern real differences.
Answer: A diplax is a double folded mantle or cloak. 'Himation' is a more
general term. Specificially it is an outer garment , cloak or mantle worn
above a chiton, but it also refers to clothes, in general. An ampechone is a
fine upper garment.
Question: I am looking for anything about the use of encaustic technique in ancient Aegean area, and if any on fabrics. Did they use any kind of silk?
Material was decorated with designs but I do not know how it was done. More than likely is embroidery, which Homer mentions.
Silk was common in ancient Greece. Most of the silk came from China on the silk road. An exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum in New York deals with this. They exhibit some of the things that Greece traded for silk. It seems unlikely that the silk that came to Greece was decorated because we see no Oriental designs amongst the pictures of garments that were made. The filmy garments that are common in Greek art are most likely silk. But there was some native silk produced from local insects. This was generally inferior to the silk from China.
Question: Were the Ancient Greeks' clothing simliar to those of the Ancient Romans? What did the men and women wear at night? Can you show me a picture of a typical men and women nightgown or pajamas..whatever they had? Thanks. Please try to email the answer back to me.
Answer: The Greek Culture was one that was very fluid and adaptable. Clothing styles and construction changed dramatically over time. During the end of the classical Greek period their influence was wide and many people followed their custom. At this time the fashions of both cultures were similar. But as you move away from these times forward or back the fashions differ more and more.
The above images relate to sleeping and beds. The suggestion is that
wealthy people slept on beds on long legs high off the floor away from vermin.
Less wealthy slept on cushions and the least wealthy slept on furs or blankets
as Odysseus did in the Odyssey. No special bed clothing is evident. In the
warm weather they slept in the nude and in the cold weather they slept in
their street clothing. It would have been rare for people to sleep alone.
Several family members would sleep in the same room. Or a mistress would
sleep on a bed while her servants slept on the floor. Men seemed to prefer
the women to be nude in bed so they could have sex with them easier. The
pictures represent not so much actual practice as what the artist considered
ideal. Maenads are often pictured nude and sleeping because they were then
available for sex. This cannot be considered the typical situation for women
as they normally slept together in one room.
Question: How do classical Athens women (4th or 5th century in Athens) dress accordingly to social class? (upper, middle, lower, slaves). How do their hairstyle, dresses, jewelry indicate which social class they are from? Would you please provide a couple of pictures with links if possible?
Answer: Everyone wore the same style of clothing. Class was indicated by hair length (slaves wore short hair), color of clothing (purple was very expensive, red was expensive, other bright colors were cheaper. Dull earth colors were cheapest), Type of fabric ( Silk was ost expensive, cotton next, linen and wool least expensive.), and jewely (Silver was most expensive, gold next, then brass, then copper. How the women adorned herserself reflected her personality. Greek women had many options.
Question: what were their clothing made of? Did the patterns on their clothe mean anything if so what did the patterns mean?
Answer: Mostly the ancient Greek clothing was made of wool. During the Bronze Age and earlier many clothing items were made of skins. Also linen made from flax was common. When the Greeks were able to trade by the sea they brought cotton from Egypt. This was more expensive. But the most expensive was silk. Native silk was available and some silk came from China over the silk road. But the Greeks had no idea of the Chinese and the Chinese had no idea of the Greeks. Most of the silk probably came to Greece via the Phoenecians. They may have also gotten silk by trad with the eastern edge of the Black Sea. The main stops on the silk road were Damascus, Bagdad, Tehran, Merv, Burkahara, Samarkind, Kashar, Hotan, Lop Nur, Dun huang, and finally Xi Oan. I do not have the old names of these cities.
None of the clothing from ancient Greece has survived. All we have are pictures of clothing on vase paintings. What we see there are images just like the others on vase paintings. They seemed to have preferred illustrations of their myths. But the ancient Greek painting is remarkable for the breadth of its subject matter and included many images of everyday life. But they did prefer paintings of people to paintings of their environment.
Question: Did the ancient greeks wear different clothes for holidays than they usually
did? if so, what kind of clothes did they wear?
Answer: This seems very likely. Some people had no clothes and were slaves. Many had only one change of clothes and even slept in them. The wealthier people, who had more than one change of clothes wore their best. This was especially true if there was a procession involved. Some clothing was sacred and that might be worn by the priests or priestesses. The following picture shows some people in a procession.
