Exhibit of Vietnam Art 300 BCE - 1970 AD

The FJKluth Art Gallery in Kent is showing paintings that provide insight into the May 4, 1970 events in Kent. As you might know when one does a search on the internet for Kent most of the data relates to this event. We are pleased to support a better understanding of this event.

Many of the soldiers who fought in the Vietnam war bought paintings in Vietnam which they brought home. This gallery has a collection of over 2 dozen paintings of this sort. This is not surprising since Vietnam is a beautiful country with many talented painters. In New York there is even a gallery devoted entirey to Vietnamese art. In these paintings there is nothing of the war that was going on at the same time. It is as though the artist wanted to forget about the war and return to peaceful times. One is actually dated 1970. Another says purchased in Saigon, 1968 on the back. The most interesting painting in my opinion is the one of women washing in the river.

There are a number of paintings of the Hmong culture. This is a very colorful culture that has maintained its identity for over 4500 years. They have done this by moving to inaccessible mountainous areas.

Artifacts are available from the Dong son Culture, and Annam cultures. The search is on for items from the Khmer and Cham cultures. We also have artifacts from the Chinese Han culture who occupied Northern Vietnam for over 1000 years.

Many other paintings and knicknacks are also available.

FJKluth Art Gallery Statement

The Visual arts are an important means of communication between the artist and patrons and the general public. This is not merely entertainment but involves thoughtful self-development. The gallery provides events where the objects can be constructed and placed on view. The show openings allow the public to come in and interact with the artist. A discussion can ensue where real communication can take place. In this way there can be learning and development. patrons should be interested in purchasing original works from the gallery. But there are other forms of involvement. Openings and exhibits allow works to be seen by the general public. Even persons with limited means can purchase original work. Meetings can be held in the environs of art. And repair services are available for those works are worthy of being preserved.

Art pieces can be commissioned.

How to Benefit from an Art Reception

Our best patron says that the best way to get involved with art is to buy something that you like. When you display it in your home, if it is good art, it will support you. If it is bad art your friends will tell you quickly. As time goes on you will naturally compare it to other pieces, and you will find out more about the artist. You may eventually outgrow it but not before you learn about better pieces. And as your knowledge of art grows and the quality of your collection grows, so the quality of your life will grow.

Art Culture Development

Art is an illustration of the culture that produces it. There is much that is sold as art that is mere decoration. But true art speaks about the culture and to it. It has an honesty to it. It is this communication that the patron is sensitive to. Art tweaks something inside that grows and builds. The cheap, dishonest, superficial falls by the wayside while the just and true perservere.

The artist is tormented by the question of what to paint. When someone commissions a painting then the answer is easy. But most art viewers are just looking and do not know what they are looking for. So the artist must look deep for inspiration. Many images and ideas come from experience. They sink into the deep recesses of the memory. There they seem to interact with other ideas. So the artist might search for the result of this interaction. One method is to study random patterns (clouds, gravel, stone walls, even random brush strokes) to see what one sees. In the randomness one sees what one wants to see. This might be the idea of interest. Then what one sees becomes an idea that can be developed. Once the idea is developed a painting can be executed. Then the painting becomes both an artifact of the painter and the society of that time and place. Such an artifact is more valuable particularly if it bears the name and date of the artist.
